Vitamin D And Sunscreen Protection

What an amazing week we’ve had with the sunshine finally coming out. I spent the most amazing few days in Whitstable in Kent in my Caravan with my family. My husband and my children were swimming in the sea, believe it or not !!!!

I love the sun, like lots of us but while there are lots of good reasons to get sun for mood, the sun’s rays do have ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This means the sun’s rays can penetrate the skin and damage cell DNA leading to fine lines, wrinkles and can lead to skin cancer. I wear my Sunni’s too, I think it stops me from squinting and therefore helps prevent the wrinkles. I also wear a minimum SPF 30 daily on my face a décolletage if its showing all year round.

My daughter Alice has very pale skin and red hair a glorious and beautiful combination but lethal in the sun if she doesn’t put on sunscreen. She wears SPF 50 every day and loves being pale so started looking after her skin with sunscreen at a young age. Putting on sunscreen is something she’s got used to as I applied on her from birth so she’s in the habit of doing it. I on the other hand have olive skin but still wear SPF 30 daily, having spent a long time going on work trips as a make-up artist to exotic and very hot locations I got used to doing this, especially as I was in the sun well before 9am and in the sun until at least 7pm.

As I wear sunscreen I therefore take my Vitamin D daily as wearing sunscreen daily means my body is not getting any Vitamin D.

According to the World Health Organization, getting anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes of sunlight on your arms, hands, and face two to three times a week is enough to enjoy the vitamin D-boosting benefits of sun but wearing sunscreen or covering up with clothing stops our skin from synthesising it so taking supplements are necessary.
